In the hall outside of Ms. Hardy’s apartment, I run into Vaughn. He’s already talking, “I found an eyewitness that puts Scarlett at five p.m. on Sunday climbing into—you ready for this—a white Mercedes.”

TWENTY-FIVE

Wednesday, 6 p.m.

After tracking down the Alexanders, we bring them in and put them in separate rooms. We decide to start with Mr. Alexander.

He and his lawyer sit across the table from me. Sheriff Owens and Vaughn stand along the wall. The sheriff doesn’t need to be in here. He’s silently showing that he doesn’t care how deep Mr. Alexander’s pockets are.

I say, “Where were you Sunday afternoon?”

“I already told you. I spent some time at Depot Hill. I did see Scarlett. I left and went home to my wife.”

“Was your wife there or still at the spa?”

“She arrived sometime later.”

“Did you know she would be returning home?”

“No, it was a surprise.”

“So, you really didn’t ‘go home to her.’”

Silence.

“Either way, those were details you could’ve told us earlier,” I say.

“You didn’t ask.”

I knew he was going to respond like that.

“Did she stay home for the evening?” I ask.

“No, she went back to join her mother.”

“What did you do after she left?”

“I did laps in my pool. Watched TV. Ate. Normal things people do on a Sunday night.”

“Why so much back and forth from the spa?”

“Because we’re fighting. Something couples do. Mary-Anne is trying to catch me with another woman.”

“Is there another woman?”

The lawyer shifts forward. “Mr. Alexander’s marriage is off the table. What questions do you have about Scarlett Macadem?”

“Do you drive a white Mercedes?”

“I do.”

“We have an eyewitness that puts Scarlett Macadem getting into a white Mercedes at five p.m. on Sunday.”

Mr. Alexander looks over at Sheriff Owens. “Is that what this is about? You should’ve done your homework, Sheriff. My wife also drives a white Mercedes.”
